House Democratic Leader Woodard Thanks Governor Kelly for Her Vetoes

The following statement is regarding the veto of House Bill 2217:

“The Kansas Department for Children and Families is already required to investigate fraud in SNAP and TANF using federal funds. HB 2217 would give Attorney General Kris Kobach nine additional staff to target programs serving Kansas's most vulnerable. I support Governor Kelly's veto of this blatant power grab that undermines those who need help the most."

The following statement is regarding the veto of House Bill 2033:

“I support the Governor’s veto of House Bill 2033 because it is legislative overreach and another attempt to chip away at the rights and responsibilities of the State Board of Education.

The following statement is regarding the veto of Senate Bill 29:

“Senate Bill 29 threatens public health by removing local authorities' power to restrict gatherings during disease outbreaks, like the ongoing measles cases in Kansas. This bill could tie up courts and make it harder to control infectious diseases, risking faster spread. I support Governor Kelly's veto of this dangerous and irresponsible bill."

The following statement is regarding the veto of Senate Bill 79:

"Targeting public assistance programs harms low-income families by limiting access to food, healthcare, and more. While Democrats have pushed for essential changes to improve childhood nutrition and reduce stigma, Republicans have continuously blocked these efforts. Kansas lawmakers should support families by making it easier to access crucial assistance. After this bill narrowly passed in the House, our bipartisan coalition supports Governor Kelly’s veto, and I urge my fellow colleagues to do the same.”
